Describe a memorable meal you have attended. What made it memorable? – the food, the company. Something else?

Reading; Proverbs 9 : 1-6 & 13 - 18

 

SERMON OUTLINE

 

1) Remembering parties or meals we have attended over the Christmas period, the subject is presented in Proverbs as invitations to two very different tables.

2) Prov 9 : 1 – 6

3) Wisdom invites us to share her hospitality.

4) She offers fear ( respect) of God, understanding of life, length of life, self-control.

5) It’s what Solomon prayed for, and Jesus exemplified.

6) Prov 9 : 13 – 18.

7) Folly’s invitation offers mockery of others, poor judgement, being too quick to speak, lack of self-discipline, being attracted by what is harmful or deceitful, inner self-destruction.

8) The St. Augustine story. People we know, in the Bible, us!

9) Whose guest will you be?

10) v12 refers to our character – that which we cannot lend, borrow or escape from.

11) Jesus’ intention for us is that we become like Him in every way. Whose guest will you be?

 

 

QUESTIONS OF APPLICATION

 

1) Are you listening to Wisdom? Why or why not?

2) Can you find wisdom without Christ?

3) What is the difference between a mocker and a wise man?  From your experience how do they respond to correction? How do you?

4) How is your personal search for wisdom progressing? How may it be enhanced in the coming year?
