Reading; Deut. 6 : 4 – 9
SERMON OUTLINE
1) The electricians need the basic background in order to respond to the demands of rewiring the house.
2) The bible is a discipline to undergird our spiritual lives, and enable us to respond to the demands of life, and living for Jesus.
3) Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth
4) Deals with how to live while we are here, as well as preparing for when we leave.
5) Some of us are readers and some are not – but key is motivation.
6) Read as you can, not as you can’t – manageable, modern, on disc?, online?, use an aid. be accountable.
7) Mat 4 : 4 . Are you spiritually malnourished?
8) Rom 12 : 2. Our minds are often very hard to control, but are profoundly effected by the influences to which we expose them.
9) The Deut passage is part of the Jewish “shema” – portions of scripture to be recited twice daily. A NT equivalent is Col 3 : 16.
10 ) The purpose of engaging with the Bible is to change us – attitudes, heart responses, behaviour.
11) It is there to be obeyed James 1 : 22 and treasured Ps 119 : 72.
12) It is there to help us be single-minded in the right sense. Mat 6 : 33 – so that we become more like Jesus.
QUESTIONS OF APPLICATION
1) Read the passage. What is your reaction? What have you read in the Bible in the past week, and what impact has it had upon you?
2) Why do you think there is such an emphasis on teaching to the children? What has been your experience here, as a child, and as an adult?
3) What is your CURRENT practice in Bible reading? How do you deal with things when motivation is weak? Is there an opportunity for the cell to help each other be accountable?
4) What are the main influences that effect how you think, view life, and behave? How does the Bible feature?
5) When have you very directly done what the Bible has said? When have you avoided doing so?
6) Look at Ps 119 : 72. How close are you to echoing those sentiments?
